Fair deal on workers' mileage urged PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 03 January 2009
The retiring boss of a large Nelson home support business is calling for an end to an "immoral" situation in which hundreds of workers travel up to 175km a week during unpaid time, in their own cars, with only a meagre mileage allowance.

The unpaid time community support workers spent driving between clients during working hours was unjust, retiring Heaphy's Home Support director Pat Heaphy said.

"Irrespective of the tough economic times, it would be immoral for the Government to let this situation continue."

Heaphy recently sold Heaphy's Home Support, which cares for 920 elderly people in the Nelson region. He said he planned to combine retirement with advocating for the low-paid workers he had spent the past 11 1/2 years working with.

He said Heaphy's, and other providers like it, received insufficient funding to increase workers' wages or mileage, and the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board was also hamstrung because it did not receive enough money to pass on to the aged-care sector.

Fatal start to 2009 for Kiwis on roads PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 02 January 2009
The new year has started badly on New Zealand roads with four deaths, including two in the South Island.

Two men died in accidents in Southland and Otago, with both crash scenes undetected until 10am yesterday.

A motorcyclist, believed to be in his mid-40s, died after failing to to take a right-hand bend on State Highway 6, 43km south of Queenstown, just before the Devil's Staircase. It is understood the Kingston man had been reported missing on New Year's Eve by family members.

A police search of the roadside located the accident scene but it was unclear when the crash happened. No other vehicle was believed to have been involved.

A 51-year-old Balclutha man, driving a sports utility vehicle, failed to take a right-hand bend in Cannibal Bay Road, near Owaka. He was the sole occupant of the vehicle, which rolled down a steep incline, stopping about 50m from the road. It was thought the accident happened just after midnight.
